2009 - I, Of The Storm (236 page digital book) by Phoenix West
My very third book! My first novel though! I, Of The Storm is about camera store owner, Carter Denton and how he takes over the Los Angeles crime scene to protect his family. Or so he claims. He takes over the mob in the 1921 but by the time the 1955 arrives he's grown tired of his life as a gangster / filmmaker. This isn't a tale of "one last score before retirement." This isn't a mafia love letter. There is no hero here. Just an aging gangster reliving his not-so-glory days and pondering redemption, if it's at all possible.
Carter Denton is being interviewed in 1956 after winning the Oscar for best picture. The movie that got him the statue is, After The Violence. A gangster movie that is a near documentary of Carter's own life. Throughout the interview Carter reveals why he doesn't deserve the praise he is receiving as he searches for redemption due to the conscious he is finally developing in his mid-50's. Your average American only knows Carter as an illusive director but there is a much dirtier side as the head of a Los Angeles crime empire. It's The Godfather meets Sin City. (Note to self: don't compare your own writing to classics.)
236 pages of gangster-ing around. Old school gangsters. Not the Snoop Dogg kind.
